Cherish (feat. Jan van der Toorn)
Pappa Bear Ft. Van Der Toorn - Cherish |1997|
Featuring Van Der Toorn
(Cherish the love we had)
As far back as I remember, the game¹s been played
Boy chace girl and Girl dissed da boy.
But there¹s only one exception to da rule
and that is loot and a whole big bag of it.
Now, I¹m speaking from experience,
and when you¹re broke you know you get no skiniens.
And if you lucky like Luciano, now here¹s my motto,
Lay it one by one and make sure it¹s legato.
Straight up macin in a rental, now see me smile.
My clothes are all from marshalls and I got my game tight.
And prayin¹ that the gold stays on my ring
and if not I¹ll spray that shit on, again.
It¹s all good, I learned how to roll with da punches
in order for me to get a little somethin¹-somethin¹.
It wasn¹t da bomb, but, Yo, I ain¹t complainin¹.
I thank the lord and so I cherish it, oh.
Cherish the love we have.
We should cherish the life we live.
Cherish the love, cherish the love, cherish the love.
Cherish the love we have for as long as we both shall live.
Cherish the love, cherish the love, cherish the love.
Oh, aha, yeah.
Nucky for this Biggie Bear Body
the game¹s alright, but this fellow got no kind of money.
So funny, cause I is broke as a joke,
But still I maintain to hold my own.
Selective, and checkin¹ my prospective, active,
and you all disreactin¹, negative,
cause all I speek is the truth, all I need is a roof
and the rest is all good.
I¹ve played the Mac, but so does everybody else.
I¹m blessed with my family and my friends.
A chosen few in my life that I cherish
And you other ³playerhaters² better just venish.
I often pray before I lay down by your side.
If you received your calling before I awake
could I make it through the night.
I¹m telling you, man.
Cherish the love we have
We should cherish the life we live.
Cherish the love, cherish the love, cherish the love.
Cherish the love we have for as long as we both shall live.
Cherish the love, cherish the love, cherish the love.
Cherish the love we have.
We should cherish the life we live.
Cherish the love, cherish the love, cherish the love.
Cherish the love we have for as long as we both shall live.
Cherish the love, cherish the love, cherish the love.
Oh, oh, oh, oh, yeah.
Cherish the love.
Baby, I surely do love you!
Why don¹t we cherish the love?
Cherish the love.
June Rollocks, known by his stage name Pappa Bear
June Rollocks, known by his stage name Pappa Bear is a Dutch Eurorap artist, and the brother of the Eurodance singer and TV-host Daisy Dee. He was one of the more popular artists of the Eurorap heyday in mid to late 1990s, having released an album titled What's My Name in 1998. Some of his biggest hits were based around covers, such as Cherish and When The Rain Begins to Fall, in then-popular arrangements, usually with the vocalist Jan van der Toorn singing the chorus. During his peak, Pappa Bear was a part of Toni Cottura's hip-hop collective, Booya Music.
Born in the Netherlands Antilles, Pappa Bear began his career as a chef. He completed his apprenticeship as the best of the year and became Chef de Cuisine. After helping his sister Daisy Rollocks, better known as Daisy Dee to produce their songs in the early 1990s, he joined the group Black Male, with whom he released three songs. In 1996, Pappa Bear joined Booya Music. The label was founded by Toni Cottura, Bülent Aris and Holger Storm and marketed artists like Nana, A.K.-S.W.I.F.T. and Mark Wahlberg alias Marky Mark and produced greats like the Backstreet Boys and *NSYNC.
After initially appearing as a guest rapper in songs by Nana and supporting him in the promotion of his first album, he released an interpretation of the Kool & the Gang classic Cherish together with Jan van der Toorn in the fall of 1997 and landed an international hit. In the spring of 1998, he relented (with van der Toorn at his side) and seamlessly continued his first success with the song When the Rain Begins to Fall. Their first album, What's My Name, was released in May 1998. The third single was Hunny Luv, again successfully supported with Van der Toorn, who took care of the chorus again. The second album should have been released in 2000, but this failed due to the dissolving of booya music. On the internet you could find the song Wunderful Life. Since then it has become very quiet around Pappa Bear. In 2009, Pappa Bear released new tracks on his MySpace page. Among other things, he covered Jeanny by Falco, he also planned a comeback in 2010.

Tony Dawson-Harrison
Captain Hollywood Project is a ‘90s eurodance music project and live touring act best known for the ground breaking crossover hits “More and More," "Only with You" and "Flying High." At the peak of its success in the '90s, the project itself achieved 10 Top-20 hits on European music charts. The project was first formed in 1990 in Nuremberg, Germany by rapper/singer, dancer and music producer Tony Dawson-Harrison (a.k.a Captain Hollywood). When first naming the project, Harrison chose the name "Captain Hollywood Project" in order to distinguish his new music for the project from his previous music. He also chose the name to give himself the creative freedom as executive producer to involve any singer, songwriter or producer of his choice when producing each of the new songs for the project. Even though the act has been widely viewed as a one-man act starring Harrison as the rapper/frontman; a talented ensemble of female backup singers, dancers and backing musicians have traditionally been included in the act by Harrison.

We're flying high
We're flying right up to the sky
We fly so high
We're flying right up to the sky
We fly so high, we fly so high
Yes I don't need no stress
'Cause that's the kind of stuff that makes a mess
Breakin' me down and takin' me to the test
Keepin' me brother from givin' my best
Gotta chill gotta chill gotta gotta kill
Before I cannot feel anything that's goin' down
Turnin' my head around and around
Takin' me to the highest level
Diggin' my own grave with a shovel
Many boss remain in my brain
Cover me truly and sing.
I cannot speak, I cannot speak
I wake up sweatin' up in my sleep
That's why, that's why I'm flyin' high
We're flying high
(We're flying high)
We're flying right up to the sky
We fly so high
(We fly so high)
We're flying right up to the sky
With an extra station from the ground
The stars are shining round and round
So high we're flying right up to the sky
We're flying high
(We fly so high, we fly so high)
We're flying high
Yeah, that's the way I got to go
When everybody's singin' my mo and mo
Pickin' up the record in a record store
Hollywood, Hollywood on the radio
Jammin', jammin' forty people bang me
It's me and gets his slam in right
So why don't you play all night
Puttin' on the jeans and the jeans all tight
Gotta go gotta go gotta go now
Try to relax and I don't know how
Listenin' to the sound I like to hear best
The sound that makes me cheer
I'm gettin' away from a everyday cry
Runnin' away from hardcore lie
I'm flyin', I'm flyin' high
We're flying high
(We're flying high)
We're flying right up to the sky
We fly so high
(We fly so high)
We're flying right up to the sky
With an extra station from the ground
The stars are shining round and round
So high we're flying right up to the sky
We're flying high
(We fly so high, we fly so high)
We're flying high
We're flying high
(We're flying high)
We're flying right up to the sky
We fly so high
(We fly so high)
We're flying right up to the sky
With an extra station from the ground
The stars are shining round and round
So high we're flying right up to the sky
We're flying high
(We fly so high, we fly so high)
We're flying high
Today, Captain Hollywood Project is recognized as a live performing duo act starring Harrison and singer/dancer Shirin von Gehlen (a.k.a. Shirin Amour) as the project's lead singer and frontwoman. Together with their live musicians and dancers, Harrison and von Gehlen perform the Captain Hollywood Project hits year-round at concert venues in the United States, Canada, South America, Europe, Russia and Australia. Before creating the Captain Hollywood Project in 1990, creator Tony Dawson-Harrison was a dancer, choreographer and music star in Europe. A native of Newark, New Jersey, Harrison originally gained his stage name in 1982 while stationed in Germany as a U.S. Army captain. During his off-duty hours, he would entertain his military friends on base by performing street dance moves in his captain's uniform. As a result, his fellow officers nicknamed him ‘Hollywood’ and later ‘Captain Hollywood.’ Harrison's career began in 1983 after his television debut as Captain Hollywood on the German music chart television show Formel Eins. For his guest appearance on the show, he did a three-minute body popping dance routine to the Jonzun Crew song "Pack Jam". Harrison quickly gained credit for being the first American to actually introduce the art forms to Germany and all of Europe in the early 1980s. When his active military duty ended in 1983, he relocated to Germany and worked as the lead dance choreographer on Formel Eins.
Between 1985 and 1987, Harrison achieved his first musical successes as a rapper, singer and music producer in Germany. He independently released singles "Deborah", "Soulsister", "Grand Piano", a solo album Do That Thang, and many other dance music tracks. The success of his early hits helped to establish him in the music business as a serious musician, solo artist and music producer. In 1989, Harrison co-founded and produced the Holland-based act Twenty 4 Seven with the Dutch producer Ruud van Rijen. As co-producer, choreographer, rapper and frontman, Harrison led singer Nance Coolen and backup dancers Giovanni Falco (a.k.a. Hanks), and Wolfgang Reis (a.k.a. Jacks) on a successful year-long run in the UK and the Netherlands. Twenty 4 Seven became recognised for its memorable dance routines featured in their music videos and in their live act. The group successfully charted with the hit singles "I Can't Stand It!", "Are You Dreaming" and the album Street Moves while also completing a successful three month European tour with MTV London that same year. Harrison decided to leave the act in 1990 in order to return to his solo career and to dedicate himself to his music project.

That's The Way Love Is
(Norman Whitfield/Barrett Strong)
Ah baby
After many tears fall from your eyes
A thousand times you ask yourself why
The one guy you love has departed
You're left alone and broken-hearted
Love just comes and goes
How long it's gonna last nobody knows
CHORUS:
That's the way love is, baby [or honey, or other endearing term]
(That's the way love is, sugar, how it is)
That's the way love is, baby
(That's the way love is, sugar, how it is)
That's how it is
I know you're walkin' down a lonesome road
And your heart is carryin' a heavy load
I know you feel like you ain't got a friend (ain't got a friend)
And your whole world's cavin' in (cavin' in)
Ah, but now is the time to be strong (to be strong)
You better forget him now that he's gone (now that he's gone)
Remember...
(chorus)
(instrumental)
Listen to me, little darlin'
The road of love is rough sometimes
But don't let it get the best of you
I've been hurt by love so many times
I know just what you're goin' through
You wish you were never born
You better forget him now that he's gone(
chorus)
Wipe away your tears
Love is here today and gone tomorrow
(That's the way love is, sugar, how it is)
All your joys turn to sorrow
(That's the way love is, sugar, how it is)
One day gladness, and the next day sadness
(That's the way love is, sugar, how it is)
..and fade

While working as a choreographer on Formel Eins in the 1980s, Harrison worked with major artists like C.C. Catch, La Toya Jackson, Kim Wilde, Paula Abdul, Natalie Cole, Milli Vanilli and many other performers. He was chosen to represent the country at the 1984 Cannes Film Festival premiere of the breakdance film Beat Street. Harrison also landed a cameo role as a dancer in the 1985 cult German film 'Macho Man'. When he entered the music business in 1986, he made a tradition of choreographing his own live act when performing with his team of backup dancers. In the 1990s, he opened a successful dance school in Germany called the 'Captain Hollywood Dance Academy' and later developed a unique style of choreography for his live act called the Crew Lock, a mixture of military style movements and locking. Artists such as DJ Bobo, Haddaway and several others have collaborated with Harrison extensively when planning, staging and choreographing a number of their live shows. By the year 2000, Harrison transitioned into working behind the scenes as a choreographer, manager and producer of boy bands in the United States and Canada. He has worked with the bands O-Town, 3rd Wish, B4-4 and Prymary Colorz.

It's Not Right But It's Okay (Thunderpuss Mix)
Whitney Houston - It's Not Right But It's Okay (Thunderpuss Mix)
[Intro]
I'm gonna be okay
I'm gonna be alright
I'm gonna be okay
I'm gonna be alright
I'm gonna be okay
I'm gonna be alright
I'm gonna be okay
I'm gonna be alright
I'm gonna be okay
I'm gonna be alright
I'm gonna be okay
I'm gonna be alright
Okay, alright, okay, alright
Okay, alright, okay, alright
Okay, alright, okay, alright, okay, alright, okay, alright
Okay, alright, okay, alright, Okay, alright
[Chorus]
It's not right but it's okay
I'm gonna make it anyway
Pack your bags up and leave
And don't you dare come running back to me
It's not right but it's okay
I'm gonna make it anyway
Close the door behind you, leave your key
I'd rather be alone than unhappy, yeah
[Post-Chorus]
Was it really worth you going out like that?
[Verse 1]
Friday night you and your boys went out to eat
Then they hung out
But you came home around three
If six of y'all went out, ah
Then four of you were really cheap, yeah
'Cause only two of you had dinner
I found your credit card receipt
[Chorus]
It's not right but it's okay
I'm gonna make it anyway
Pack your bags up and leave
And don't you dare come running back to me
It's not right but it's okay
I'm gonna make it anyway
Close the door behind you, leave your key
I'd rather be alone than unhappy, yeah
[Post-Chorus]
Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, yeah, ah, yeah, ah, yeah, ah
[Verse 2]
I'll pack your bags
So you can leave town for a week, yes I am
The phone rings
And then you look at me
You said it was one of your friends
Down on 54th Street, boy
So why did 2-1-3
Show up on your caller ID? Oh
[Chorus]
It's not right but it's okay
I'm gonna make it anyway
Pack your bags up and leave
And don't you dare come running back to me
It's not right but it's okay
I'm gonna make it anyway
Close the door behind you, leave your key
I'd rather be alone than unhappy, yeah
[Bridge]
(I've been through all of this before)
I've been through all this before
(So how could you think)
Don't think about it, don't think about it
(That I would stand around and take some more)
Get gone, get gone
(Things are gonna change)
Things have got to change, baby
(Don't wanna be a fool anymore)
You don't stand a chance, boy
(That's why you have to leave)
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
(So don't turn around to see my face)
Don't you turn around
There's no more tears left here for you to see
Was it really worth you going out like that?
Tell me, boy
Was it really worth, was it really worth
Was it really worth, was it really worth
Was it really worth, was it really worth
Was it really worth you going out like that?
Tell me, boy
See, I'm moving on
And I refuse to turn back, yeah
See, all of this time
I thought I had somebody down for me
It turns out
It turns out
Oh, it turns out
Oh oh, it turns out
It turns out, oh
It turns out
You were making a fool of me
[Chorus]
It's not right (It's not right) but it's okay (It's okay)
I'm gonna make it anyway (I'm gonna, I'm gonna)
Pack your bags up and leave (Close the door and leave your key)
And don't you dare come running back to me
It's not right (It's not right) but it's okay (It's okay, baby)
I'm gonna make it anyway (I can pay my own rent)
Close the door behind you, leave your key
(Pay my light bill, take care of my babies)
I'd rather be alone than unhappy, yeah (Oh, oh, oh oh)
[Outro]
Oh Lord, oh, ooh, get up and leave
Yeah yeah yeah yeah
I'd rather be alone than unhappy
It's not right, it's okay, baby
I can pay my own rent
Pay my light bill, take care of my babies
Oh, oh, oh oh
I'm gonna be okay, I'm gonna be alright
I'm gonna be okay, I'm gonna be alright
I'm gonna be okay, I'm gonna be alright
I'm gonna be okay, I'm gonna be alright
I'm gonna be okay, I'm gonna be alright
I'm gonna be okay, I'm gonna be alright
I'm gonna be okay, I'm gonna be alright
Whitney Elizabeth Houston was born on August 9th, 1963, in what was then a middle-income neighborhood in Newark, New Jersey. She was the daughter of ex-Army serviceman and Newark city administrator John Russell Houston Jr. and gospel singer Emily "Cissy" (Drinkard) Houston. Her elder brother Michael is a singer, and her elder half-brother is former basketball player Gary Garland. Her parents were both African-American. Through her mother, Houston was a first cousin of singers Dionne Warwick and Dee Dee Warwick. Her godmother was Darlene Love and her honorary aunt was Aretha Franklin, whom she met at age eight or nine when her mother took her to a recording studio. Houston was raised a Baptist, but was also exposed to the Pentecostal church. After the 1967 Newark riots, the family moved to a middle-class area in East Orange, New Jersey, when she was four. Her parents later divorced.
At age 11, Houston started performing as a soloist in the junior gospel choir at the New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, where she also learned to play the piano. Her first solo performance in the church was "Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah". While Houston was still in school, her mother, Cissy, continued to teach her how to sing. Cissy was a member of the group The Sweet Inspirations which also opened for and sang backup for Elvis Presley. Houston spent some of her teens touring nightclubs where Cissy was performing, and she would occasionally get onstage and perform with her. Houston was also exposed to the music of Chaka Khan, Gladys Knight, and Roberta Flack, most of whom would have an influence on her as a singer and performer. In 1977, at age 14, she became a backup singer on the Michael Zager Band's single "Life's a Party". In 1978, at 15, Houston sang background vocals for Chaka Khan and Lou Rawls.
Houston attended Mount Saint Dominic Academy, a Catholic girls' high school in Caldwell, New Jersey: she graduated in 1981. During her teens, Houston met Robyn Crawford, who she described as the "sister she never had". Crawford went on to become Houston's best friend, roommate, and executive assistant. After Houston rose to stardom, she and Crawford were rumored to be lovers, which they both denied in 1987. In 2019, several years after Houston's death, Crawford stated that their early relationship had included sexual activity, but that Houston ended this for fear of others' reactions. In the early 1980s, Houston started working as a fashion model after a photographer saw her at Carnegie Hall singing with her mother. She became the first woman of color to appear on the cover of Seventeen and appeared in Glamour, Cosmopolitan and Young Miss, and appeared in a Canada Dry soft drink TV commercial. Her looks and girl-next-door charm made her one of the most sought-after teen models.
In 1982, under the suggestion of longtime friend Valerie Simpson, Houston signed with Tara Productions and hired Daniel Gittleman, Seymour Flics, and Gene Harvey as her managers. With them, Houston continued her burgeoning recording career by working with producers Michael Beinhorn, Bill Laswell and Martin Bisi on an album they were spearheading called One Down, which was credited to the music group Material. For that project, she contributed the ballad "Memories", a cover of a song by Hugh Hopper of Soft Machine. Robert Christgau of The Village Voice called her contribution "one of the most gorgeous ballads you've ever heard". She also appeared as a lead vocalist on one track on a Paul Jabara album, entitled Paul Jabara and Friends, released by Columbia Records in 1983.

Michael Houston and his mother, Cissy, talked to Oprah Winfrey about the aftermath of Whitney Houston's death on Oprah's Next Chapter which aired two days before the release of Cissy's memoir, "Remembering Whitney," today.
Cissy Houston has revealed that she doesn't blame Whitney Houston's ex-husband, bad boy singer Bobby Brown, for getting her daughter hooked on drugs; it turns out Cissy's son Michael first introduced his younger sister Whitney to cocaine. With Cissy by his side, Michael admitted to Oprah Winfrey that he still carries that guilt with him. "I'm living but I'm not alive," he tells Winfrey. "I feel responsible for her. I always have," he says. "I just felt like I should have taken better care of her." Michael confirms that he introduced her to cocaine in the 1980s, before she met Brown, but also claimed that back then, cocaine was acceptable in the entertainment industry. "It was available. It wasn't a bad word like it is now." "Because we didn't have the bodies in the street," Winfrey continued. "So that's the demon you live with?" "Every day. Every day. It's something I got to live with for the rest of my life."

October 26, 2018, East Orange, NJ: The East Orange Police Division, under the leadership of Public Safety Liaison José Cordero and Police Chief Phyllis Bindi, launched the “Drive Right, Be Right” Campaign, a targeted effort to improve the quality of life throughout the city.
The campaign, which was created as a direct response to more than 1,000 citizen surveys conducted over the past few months, officially began on Wednesday, October 24, 2018.
Based on survey results, a large majority of residents feel relatively safe living and working in East Orange, and with good reason. Under Mayor Ted R. Green’s administration, East Orange’s crime rate has dropped 21% overall and 29% in violent crimes compared to 2017.
But improving residents’ perceptions of safety and security require continually identifying the public safety issues that matter most to residents, and to focus police efforts on minimizing the negative effects they cause across all neighborhoods of the city, Cordero said.
“Using insightful and intelligence-led community policing, this campaign comprehensively addresses our citizens’ most pressing concerns, ranging from traffic safety, including pedestrian crosswalk safety, and aggressive panhandling to juvenile curfew enforcement and other quality-of-life concerns,” said Bindi. “Our goal is not to ticket or arrest people. Our goal is to be responsive to the needs of our residents and reinforce a culture where obeying the law becomes a lifestyle.”
During the first 21 hours of the campaign, police made nearly 500 motor vehicle stops, issued 398 motor vehicle summons, and effected 29 arrests for a variety of traffic, narcotics, and other offenses. Police engaged in hi-visibility crime prevention operations throughout the city, deployed a mobile camera to an area with of a high concentration of community complaints, and investigated suspicious activities, including aggressive panhandling, loud noise, reckless bike riders, and other quality-of-life complaints. Police officers interacted with over 100 citizens and informed them of the nature and purpose of the operation and reinforced awareness of city laws.
Bindi said the campaign is a multipronged initiative that includes awareness and education as much as it does enforcement.
Based on the surveys, traffic safety ranked among the top five concerns for residents.
In 2017, there were 1,927 motor vehicle accidents in East Orange. Expanded efforts this year have already resulted in 106 fewer accidents compared to this time last year. Officials are hoping that this new campaign, which includes “Cops in the Crosswalk” to improve pedestrian safety, will increase that amount even more. On the first day of the campaign, “Cops in the Crosswalk” yielded a significant amount of motor vehicle stops and summonses.
In addition to extra patrols, Bindi said police will conduct a variety of operations and use technology to identify violators and to minimize the number of traffic infractions and quality-of-life concerns that make our residents feel unsafe.
“More than a decade ago, there was a time when motorists were afraid to commit traffic infractions while traveling through or driving in East Orange because they knew there was a good chance that they would get caught. During that same period, potential criminals avoided our city for the exact same reason,” said Cordero. “We want to rekindle that feeling and make sure that our residents and visitors know that we are doing everything possible to make East Orange safe.”
Public safety remains one of the mayor’s top priorities and he commends the great work that has been done in the past few months to curb crime.
“We have had a steady decline in crime in 2018,” said Green. “A stronger police presence, strict enforcement, and consistent communication about our efforts are going a long way to making people feel safe. I encourage all residents to take heed to our warnings and follow the campaign’s slogan: Drive Right and Be Right.”

New Hope Baptist Church in Newark New Jersey
The funeral of singer Whitney Houston at the New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, New Jersey was attended by some of the nation's most celebrated musicians and actors on Saturday. It was also broadcast live on national television.
The 1,500 “invitation-only” guests included dozens of celebrities and musicians including Stevie Wonder, Dionne Warwick, Tyler Perry, Alicia Keys, Kevin Costner and the late singer’s ex-husband Bobby Brown. It was a celebration of her life, with tributes, songs and stories.
The church holds special significance because it’s where Houston first sang as a child. Houston, who passed away on Feb. 11, was 48.
Kevin Costner, her co-star in “The Bodyguard,” said he and Houston had a lot in common and that the church "was our private bond."
He said despite her fame "the Whitney I knew still wondered am I good enough, am I pretty enough, it was the burden that made her great and... what made her stumble in the end."
Costner added, it was "the inexplicable burden that comes with fame - call it doubt, call it fear - I've had mine.''
A teary Alicia Keys spoke about her friendship with Houston and sang a tribute to her friend.
"She would call you for no reason at all, just to say Hi. That's rare," said Keys. "I think in so many ways she reached back to me, and all these beautiful young artists and made us feel strong and capable and loved. So I think she's an angel to us."
Her mentor Clive Davis said "she never took anything for granted, she was always grateful."
Tyler Perry remembered Houston's grace.
The funeral ended with a recording of Houston's "I Will Always Love You" as her casket was taken from the church and the guests poured out behind it.
Close family friend Aretha Franklin had been expected to sing at the service but was reportedly too ill to attend.
Whitney Houston is to be buried on Sunday at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield, New Jersey.
Pastor Joe A. Carter

Pastor Joe A. Carter was born on August 25, 1970. At the age of nine-years-old, Pastor Carter told his father of his desire to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and on Sunday, March 16, 1980, he preached his initial sermon from Genesis 1:1; entitled “The Magic of God.”
Pastor Carter’s family relocated to Waukegan, IL and it was there that word of Pastor Carter’s preaching gift brought him to the attention of well-known pastors and preachers. At the age of 21, Pastor Carter was preaching the late night services at the National Baptist Convention, U.S.A. Inc. and it was here in 1990 that Reverend Dr. C.E. Thomas, then pastor of The New Hope Baptist Church; discerned the Spirit of God working in this young preacher.
In 1993, Pastor Carter was called to serve as the Assistant Pastor of The New Hope Baptist Church, a position he held faithfully until April 26, 1998, when he was installed as Co-Pastor. Pastor Joe A. Carter became the Pastor of The New Hope Baptist Church on November 1, 2000; the youngest pastor in the church’s 118th history.
Pastor Carter began his ministry by sharing the Word of God across the United States, influencing the lives of many in need of Jesus Christ. God has blessed the gift that some thought was “just a phase” to transform the hearts of many for over 30 years.
In the 27 years Pastor Carter has been united with The New Hope Baptist Church, he has proven himself as one used by God to guide, provide, protect, and shepherd the spiritual lives of God’s people. Under Pastor Carter’s tutelage, he has worked tirelessly as an advocate for cohesive change within the community and religious sector by developing and organizing Christian Leaders for Community Empowerment (CLCE), a collaboration of area pastors who are concerned with the state of our communities.
Pastor Carter believes the problem with our communities, our nation, and our world could be solved if we addressed the immediate and long-term needs of our children, who are the precious fruit of today and our hope for a brighter tomorrow.

In 1983, Gerry Griffith, an A&R representative from Arista Records, saw Houston performing with her mother in a New York nightclub. He convinced Arista's head Clive Davis to make time to see her perform. Davis was impressed and immediately offered a worldwide recording contract, which Houston eventually signed after being alternatively sought after by another label. (Houston had been offered deals by recording agencies before—by Michael Zager in 1980, and by Elektra Records in 1981—but her mother declined them on the grounds that Whitney had yet to complete high school. Later that year, Houston made her national television debut alongside Davis on The Merv Griffin Show, she performed "Home", a song from the musical The Wiz.
During the 1980s, MTV was coming into its own and received criticism for not playing enough videos by black artists. With Michael Jackson breaking down the color barrier for black men, Houston did the same for black women. She became the first black woman to receive heavy rotation on the network following the success of the "How Will I Know" video. Following Houston's breakthrough, other African-American women, such as Janet Jackson and Anita Baker, were successful in popular music. Baker commented that "Because of what Whitney and Sade did there was an opening for me ... For radio stations, black women singers aren't taboo anymore."

Shola Ama (born 8 March 1979) is a British singer from London, who scored her biggest hit with a cover of Turley Richards' "You Might Need Somebody" (1997) and "Still Believe" (1999) which was one of the first productions by the Norwegian producing team Stargate. At 15, Ama was singing to herself on a platform at Hammersmith tube station, and was overheard by Kwame Kwaten, a producer at the FreakStreet record label. In 1995, an unknown independent label released a single titled "Celebrate", which was a ballad produced by D'Influence. Although the single was not a commercial success, it did draw attention to Shola Ama as an artist. On her 16th birthday, she signed a recording contract with WEA. The single "You're the One I Love" was her first single release for WEA in 1996; it barely made an impact on the charts, only managing to reach No. 85. Her second WEA single, "You Might Need Somebody", remains her biggest hit. This Turley Richards cover reached No. 4 on the UK Singles Chart in April 1997. It remained in the top 40 for almost two months, becoming one of 1997's biggest hits. A re-release of "You're the One I Love" followed in August 1997 and reached #3. Her third single "Who's Loving My Baby" was released in November 1997 and reached #13. At the age of 18, Shola Ama released her debut album Much Love (1997).
