Special Q - Savoir-faire [100K Compilation]
Born and grown up in a small town near Venice, in Italy, Special Q started to make his way influenced, since his youth, by 80's music cassettes, thanks to his brother. Filtered synths, retourned delay flanger sounds, vocoder and a lot of secrets drops, make his music really attractive and so groovy.
Euan Ellis - Sea Bed
Euan Ellis - Sea Bed
Euan Ellis is an electronic music producer from Manchester UK. He creates synth-driven, chilled out musical landscapes. In an email, he told me about how he became interested in creating music, his creative process and the themes and musical ideas that went into his latest EP entitled Undiscovered.
Karl Magi: What are the factors that made you want to start creating music in the first place?
Euan Ellis: Although I had always had a love for music from a young age, after trying out the clarinet for the first time, quickly realised that music was something I wanted to pursue. Soon after I got a clarinet, I joined a local music establishment with multiple different ensembles ranging from amateur to experienced which I attended this for seven years, making my way up to the more experienced bands through high school. In 2014, I became somewhat obsessed with synthesizers for whatever reason and this lead me to wanting to create my own music. The first synth I got was the Korg Kaossilator 2S, a handheld loop-recording digital synth. At the time, I was completely new to creating music and didn’t even know what a DAW was, so I was just making silly loops with the Kaossilator. I soon advanced to a midi keyboard (Novation Launchkey 49) which came with a free version of ableton live and that’s when I really started to make electronic music. So, it’s taken me around 5 years to get to where I am now, yet I still feel I have a long way to go.
KM: How and why did you start making more synth-driven electronic music?
EE: I think I’ve always done synth based music but my style and genre has changed, especially in the last 2 years. For example, back in 2015-17 I didn’t really know what I wanted to make. Like I would go from tropical House (bad tropical house) to synthwave to D'n'B etc;. I regret releasing some of the early tracks I made because it no longer reflects my style. Now though, I stick to genres like chillwave and synthwave and try to evoke some sort of emotion.
KM: Tell me more about your sources of creative inspiration.
EE: Usually, to fuel my creativity, I listen to other artist that are making the style of music that I am aiming for, artists such as ‘Hello Meteor’, ‘A.L.I.S.O.N’, ‘HOME’, ‘Voyage’ and more. Another way I get inspiration is by taking something from the outside world, weather that be a place or environment, and try to turn that into music. My latest EP Undiscovered is a good example of where I did exactly that. The first track on the EP Mirage is based on the desert. For this, I tried to imagine what it would feel like to be in that environment in the present moment and then then turning those feelings into music. I would also pull up an image of that environment off of Google and try to turn it into music.
KM: How do you go about creating new music?
EE: I usually start with the sound design because I find it helps me get an idea of what the main elements of the track are going to sound like. This could be a pad or main synth chords. Once I’ve got a rough ‘sketch’ of the main synths, I’ll start to write a chord progression for the chorus section of the song because I like to start with the main idea. Next, I’ll add drums and suddenly the song is coming together. After that I polish the main idea and start the intro and verse. A lot of the time, the music I start doesn’t get finished because I come up with a new, better idea than the last which is something that most music creators struggle with.
KM: Let's talk about Undiscovered. What are the ideas/themes/musical concepts behind it and how did you go about making it?
EE: The main idea behind Undiscovered was to try to capture the essence of different environments and transport my listeners to that place through the music. Like I said earlier, I used pictures and mental images of those places to inspire the sound and feel of the tracks. The difficulty was maintaining my musical style whilst creating something that’s quite original and unique. The Cabin in the Snow is different to what I normally make, being a more ambient track, but I think it fits nicely with the rest, acting as a moment of calm and a break from the synthy beats. I thought it would be cool to have the art as five terrariums representing each track and the different biomes.
KM: Musically, where do you want to go in the future?
EE: Now, my aims are to keep getting better at creating music, more specifically, sound design, mixing and song structure and hopefully grow my fan base. I’m currently studying Creative Music Technology at Salford University and when I graduate, I want to have the necessary skills to be able to take on roles such sound engineer, film composer, game composer, sound designer, recording engineer and more. Also, now I’ve started to get more of a following, I’m thinking of getting a live set together with my best songs to perform.
KM: What's your take on the current synth-based electronic music scene?
EE: It seems to be doing great especially on YouTube channels like Electronic Gems where I’ve had music featured and had over 250k views on my most popular track. I think people are more exploratory in the type of music they listen to these days and chillwave/synthwave is a well-liked alternate to mainstream music.
KM: How do you re-light the creative fires when they start to go out?
EE: I often go through these periods of writer’s block but I always find a way to overcome it. Whether that’s by listening to other music, taking a break for a day or two, taking the dog for a walk or simply trying to come up with something new every day until I get something I like. When I can’t come up with any ideas I want to make into a full track, I’ll just open Ableton and see what I come up with until I get something I really like.

Biography
With over ten years’ experience in the music game, including three full length albums and a slew of EPs, Sweatson Klank – formerly known as Take. He is one of L.A’s longest standing producers working at the periphery of hip hop and electronic music, a man who had a direct hand in shaping L.A’s beat scene in the 00s through the Sketchbook night alongside Kutmah. Whether or not you’ve heard his music before you would have felt the impact of his work.
1. Based in Los Angeles, Take (Sweatson Klank) is a composer who continues to push the boundaries of instrumental hip-hop music into new directions. After multiple successful EP’s under his belt, Take finally unleashed his debut full length player in 2007, Earthtones and Concrete. This music is nothing short of an epic journey with continuously evolving collages that lead the listener down a dust covered road of bit-crushed melodies and molested jazz samples. Songs coated in emotion and rich in cinematic quality who’s auras’ retain the heavy burden of urban streets. The 30 years-old multi-instrumentalist/DJ/producer describes his music as “rooted in hip-hop but on a spaceship headed for a new and better place… somewhere out there”. After studying music engineering and composition at The Evergreen State College in Washington, Take returned to Los Angeles to dive in and focus solely on music. In the last several years, he has composed and produced multiple 12” EPs and remixes for labels such as ButterMilk, Poobah Records, Astro Lab, Eat Concrete Records and more. He also recently completed scoring original music for New Line Cinema’s King of Kong and Clint Eastwood: A Life in Film. Also, Take joined with the Dublab family for which he regularly delivers mixes and DJ sets. Take has long been at the center of an ever growing scene of talented musicians/producer/DJs in the Los Angeles area. As a co-founder of the legendary beat showcase night Sketchbook, he has fine crafted his DJ sets for the last 10 years and also adapted his own compositions for an interesting live performance. Using a laptop, synths, samplers, guitar pedals and any gadget available to re-create his music, Take’s live sets strive to be more than just a guy staring at a laptop. He is also currently working with producer/keyboardist Black Monk to bring even more interaction into the live setting, aiming to eventually have an interchangeable group of musicians and producers performing these songs. Take has been fortunate enough to share the stage, whether DJing or performing live, with such artists as Prefuse 73, Mos Def, Daedelus, Caural, Nobody, Ammoncontact, Scienz of Life, Flying Lotus, Ta’Raach, Edit and more.
2. Take is a hardcore/metal band from Las Vegas, Nevada. Their lyrics send positive and honest messages to their fan base, and also contain strong political stands and beliefs.
3. Take is a garage/punk/synth/dance music project with intense image-driven lyrics taking on politics, philosophy, religion, money, war, fear, and the way people treat each other. Formed in Denver, Colorado, USA, Take’s first, eponymously-titled album was released in 2009. Take’s dedication to the craft of songwriting, their multi-layered arrangements, and their frenetic live shows make them one of the few bands whose energy, appeal, and cultural relevance are equally matched. Band members are Erich Auber (guitars, synth, programming, bass, vocals), Adam Arscott (bass, guitars, synth, vocals) and Jesse Livingston (vocals, synth, guitars).
4. Take is a Japanese composer and arranger who collaborated with several doujin music circles (mainly XL Project) and owns his own doujin music label, Thermosphere. Not active since 2006.

De Lorra is from Joplin, Missouri
Joplin, officially known as the City of Joplin, is a city in Jasper and Newton counties in the southwestern corner of the U.S. state of Missouri. The bulk of the city is in Jasper County, while the southern portion is in Newton County. Joplin is the largest city in Jasper County - even though it is not the county seat, and it is the 12th most populous city in the state. As of the 2010 census, the city's population was 50,150. The city covers an area of 35.69 square miles (92.41 km2) on the outer edge of the Ozark Mountains. Joplin is the main hub of the three-county Joplin-Miami, Missouri-Oklahoma Metro area, which is home to 210,077 people making it the 5th largest metropolitan area in Missouri. In 2011, the city was ravaged by a violent EF5 tornado. In 1933 during the Great Depression, the notorious criminals Bonnie and Clyde spent some weeks in Joplin, where they robbed several area businesses. Tipped off by a neighbor, the Joplin Police Department attempted to apprehend the pair. Bonnie and Clyde escaped after killing Newton County Constable John Wesley Harryman and Joplin Police Detective Harry McGinnis; however, they were forced to leave most of their possessions behind, including a camera. The Joplin Globe developed and printed the film, which showed now-legendary photos of Bonnie holding Clyde at mock gunpoint, and of Bonnie with her foot on a car fender, posed with a pistol in her hand and cigar in her mouth. The Missouri Advisory Council on Historic Preservation nominated the house where the couple stayed, at 34th Street and Oak Ridge Drive, for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places on February 13th, 2009. Lead was discovered in the Joplin Creek Valley before the Civil War, but only after the war did significant development take place. While Joplin was first settled for lead mining, zinc, often referred to as "jack", was the most important mineral resource.

Birocratic - Tony's Belated Breakfast
Brandon Rowan, aka Birocratic, is a 24-year-old producer and multi-instrumentalist hailing from central New Jersey. After playing in & recording friends’ bands in high school, a decidedly non-traditional career path over the past five years has taken him directly into the heart of Brooklyn as a key player in the emerging local underground hip-hop / electronic scene. His penchant for combining of heady, jazzy sample chops, melodic bass lines, and vibrant drums proves instantly recognizable. With some key collaborators like the streaming phenomenon Chillhop Records, as well as Atlantic’s Big Beat imprint, Birocratic has become a staple of instrumental hip-hop and the thriving online beat-scene writ large.
As a teen learning production at NYU’s Clive Davis Institute, Rowan first released a series of short dorm-room beat-tapes via Soundcloud and Bandcamp; these quickly found their way to virally nascent YouTube channels (e.g., BuzzFeed, Casey Neistat) in a landscape that was, at the time, fairly barren; these placements quickly helped Rowan reach tens of millions of ears while enabling him to build a career around the growing opportunities for licensing his unique tunes online.
Throughout these years, Biro has remained committed to independently releasing his music, a strategy that has proven quite successful—recently enabling him to forgo his side job of serving tables in order to pursue music full-time (a lifelong dream of his). Alongside his numerous releases—clocking in at four beat-tapes in the Beets series, two Leftovers tapes, and an experimental jazz EP called Replaced—Biro has seen extensive time on stage at many premiere Brooklyn venues, including providing direct support for Mndsgn to a sold-out crowd at Baby’s All Right. His many live appearances (complete with live bass guitar, keyboards, and finger drumming) in NYC have afforded him a bird’s-eye view of the landscape as he signs with Rogue Agency and readies himself to tour North America in 2018.

Constellation Profile - Pyxis -
Pyxis[a] is a small and faint constellation in the southern sky. Abbreviated from Pyxis Nautica, its name is Latin for a mariner's compass (contrasting with Circinus, which represents a draftsman's compass). Pyxis was introduced by Nicolas-Louis de Lacaille in the 18th century, and is counted among the 88 modern constellations.
Pyxis is located close to the stars that formed the old constellation Argo Navis, the ship of Jason and the Argonauts. Parts of Argo Navis were the Carina (the keel or hull), the Puppis (the poop deck or stern), and the Vela (the sails). These eventually became their own constellations. In the 19th century, John Herschel suggested renaming Pyxis to Malus (meaning the mast) but the suggestion was not followed. T Pyxidis, located about 4 degrees northeast of Alpha Pyxidis, is a recurrent nova that has flared up to magnitude 7 every few decades. Also, three star systems in Pyxis have confirmed exoplanets. The Pyxis globular cluster is situated about 130,000 light-years away in the galactic halo. This region was not thought to contain globular clusters. The possibility has been raised that this object might have escaped from the Large Magellanic Cloud.
The plane of the Milky Way passes through Pyxis. A faint constellation, its three brightest stars Alpha, Beta and Gamma Pyxidis are in a rough line. At magnitude 3.68, Alpha is the constellation's brightest star. It is a blue-white star approximately 880 light years (270 parsecs) distant and around 22,000 times as luminous as the Sun.

Henry Saiz is the creator of a style that is a combination of his love for all things electronic with a deep passion for art. His music, as well as his work as a sound designer for film and TV has always been marked as forward thinking in approach and groundbreaking upon delivery. Henry's sound refuses to fall into a singular category, he takes in influence on many different levels and incorporates this into his live and DJ sets by forging a perfect balance of Electronica, Disco, House and Techno.
Henry's first productions were released through the highly regarded Global Underground and Paradigm Musik imprints. These releases were instantly noticed by house giant John Digweed, which led to creating one of the biggest tracks of 2009, which was also named as Pete Tong’s Essential New Tune. Released on Bedrock, Henry's remix of Guy J’s “Lamur” was regarded by critics and DJ’s alike as “the track of the year”. Following the success of this remix, yet another giant label; Renaissance commissioned the release of “Artificial Paradises EP” and “Madre Noche EP” in 2009 and “The Rider EP” in 2010.
Not a man to be content with such success, Henry whilst producing some of the biggest tracks around has also simultaneously been developing his live show. Using a combination of Native software and hardware, an Akai APC-40, Access Virus TI and other equipment, Henry has complete control over his meticulously created and fully original edits, loops and tracks. The integration of these techniques into his highly acclaimed podcast “The Labyrinth” and both live and DJ environments has allowed Henry to show his true potential in building sets that strike a chord with audiences across the world. His rising reputation earned Henry the honour of being asked to mix Balance Music’s 019 compilation. Following on from the likes of Timo Maas, Joris Voorn, Will Saul and Agoria, Henrys addition to this world-renowned mix series has more than lived up to expectations and has set a new benchmark in depth and quality.
Whilst being a producer, DJ and live performer is paramount to Henry, another element close to his heart is finding and developing new talent. Henry started his own label, Natura Sonoris (Nature Of Sound) in 2008 and it has become a platform for not only his own productions but also for artists such as Damabiah, Cora Novoa, Sistema and Ryan Davis to name but a few. The focus of the label is to connect electronic music with art and life. This is reflected in all aspects of each release from the music itself down to the artwork, a formula that has been received extremely well and now has a big following worldwide. September 2012 sees the release of his new single - Henry Saiz ‘Our Discovery’, which has been garnering a huge following this summer on the white isle, with supporters including Lee Foss, Sasha, Audiofly, Blond:ISH and many others.
Henry’s long awaited artist album is now underway, entitled ‘Reality is for those who are not strong enough to confront their dreams’. Due for release in February 2013 on his own label Natura Sonoris, this ground-breaking concept album engages his fans in an exciting and never-before-done way, by asking them to send him recordings and samples that he will incorporate into tracks from his album. Everyone can be involved in the creative process; fans can use the custom built interface on http://www.wearehenrysaiz.com to send him their thoughts, noises, field recordings or any other sound that means something to them. Be a part of his album today by visiting the site on your computer or smart phone.
Henry has now taken his DJ and Live shows around the globe. He has also been a part of festivals such as Sónar and Creamfields amongst many others and continues to be one of the most popular up-and-coming Spanish artists of his generation, having recently won the categories of ‘Best Live Act, Best Label and Best Compilation’ in the prestigious 2012 DJ Mag Spain awards, and he also won the ‘Best of 2011’ award in DEEJAY Magazine. His constant growth has enabled him to spread his music to new audiences and is, without doubt, one of the bright new talents on the global electronic music scene

Vintage Toyota Corolla
Here’s something we wish we saw more of in the States — a vintage Japanese race car with well-documented motorsports provenance. According to the auction, this TE27 Toyota Corolla Levin is one of three imported to New Zealand in 1973 to compete in the Heatway Rally. It had old school work done to its valvetrain and bottom end and seems to have retained many of its period mods, like twin 45 Dellorto carbs. And since it came directly from Japan, that motor is a 2T-G.
The auction lists a bunch of impressive sounding events — “1st New Zealand Historic Saloon Class Final national race meeting at Baypark Raceway, April 1975 Race 21, Intermarque Classics, 1st place of 20 cars” — but we have no clue as to their significance. Any kiwis care to enlighten? The car underwent a four-year restoration in 1989 and seems to have been thoroughly documented by various New Zealand historic and motorsports clubs.
Coupled with the the Aussie 1968 Toyota 1600GT that any serious motorsports fan would fall in love with, we are reminded that the US sorely lacks respect for cars like this. Few appear to have been restored, kept or documented. Even one of the original 1979 IMSA RX-7s — which kicked off one of the longest streaks of victory in US road race history — is reportedly decaying in a shed somewhere.
The auction house expects to fetch AUD $38,000 to $48,000 for this car (USD $39,000 to $50,000). The auction will be held October 19th 2011 and the Lot Number is 89.
