Club House - Do It Again Meets Billie Jean (1983)

club-house.jpg

In the morning you go gunning
For the man who stole your water
Then you fire til he is done in
But they catch you at the border

And the mourners are all singing
As they drag you by your feet
But the hangman isn't hanging
And they catch you on the street

You go back, Jack, do it again
Wheel turning round and round
You go back, Jack, do it again

When you know she's no high climber
Then you find your only friend
In a room with your two timer
And you're sure you're near the end

Then you love a little wild one
And she brings you only sorrow
All the time you know she's smiling
You'll be on your knees tomorrow

Yeah, you go back, Jack, do it again
Wheel turning round and round
You go back, Jack, do it again

She says I am the one

Billy Jean's not my lover
Billy Jean's not my lover
Billy Jean's not my lover
Billy Jean's not my lover..

Club House was an Italian house music studio group composed of Gianfranco Bortolotti, Carl Fanini, Hidalgo Serra, and Silvio Pozzoli. The group scored a hit in 1983 with a mashup medley of Steely Dan's "Do it Again" and Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean", titled "Do It Again Billie Jean" (Medley). It reached No. 7 in Ireland, No. 11 in the UK and No. 75 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. In 1991, they hit number-one on the U.S. Hot Dance Music/Club chart with "Deep in My Heart". which uses portions of Kier Kirby's vocals from Deee-Lite's 1990 single "Power of Love". The same two songs in Club House's 1983 medley were also recorded as a note-for-note dance medley by the Detroit Michigan band Slingshot,  which hit number-one on the dance chart with its cover version. There was a further version by Brooklyn Express, a New York studio project by Began Cekic and Eric Durham, also in 1983. Club House was also well known for the dance single "Light My Fire" (featuring Carl) which peaked at number 7 in the UK Singles Chart in April 1994. The follow-up single, "Living in the Sunshine", was not quite so successful as it only managed number 21 in the UK in July the same year.

Tyrone Brunson - The Smurf (12")

A-26232-1244227673.jpeg.jpg

Tyrone Brunson (born Calvin Tyrone Brunson; March 22, 1956 – May 25, 2013) was an American singer and musician, who played the bass guitar. One of his most successful singles was an electro-funk instrumental titled "The Smurf" (1982), which reached #14 on the Billboard R&B chart in 1983 and led to further dance records about The Smurfs.

Calvin Tyrone Brunson was born in Washington, D.C.. In his early career he played is several local groups. He was the leader of the mid-1970s funk band The Family. Later he was the bassist for the late-1970s funk band Osiris. His first single, "The Smurf", released in the UK on the Mercury Records label, entered the UK Singles chart on December 25, 1982, and reached #52; it remained in the chart for 5 weeks. "The Smurf" appeared on Brunson's debut studio album, Sticky Situation. In 1983, the follow-up U.S. single, the album's title track, reached #25 on the R&B chart. In 1984, Brunson released his second studio album, Fresh. While the title track reached #22 on the R&B chart, no other singles made a significant dent on the chart. In 1984, Brunson released his third studio album, Love Triangle, but with no successful singles, the album fizzled on the charts. Later on, Brunson was a backing vocalist, most notably for the R&B/pop trio Levert. After leaving the music business in the 1990s, he became an IT instructor. Tyrone Brunson died on May 25, 2013 in Washington, D.C., at the age of 57.

S'Express (pronounced ess-express; sometimes spelled S'Xpress or S-Express; otherwise known as Victim of the Ghetto) were an English dance music act from the late 1980s, who had one of the earliest commercial successes in the acid house genre. "Theme from S'Express", which contained elements from Rose Royce's "Is It Love You're After", was one of the earliest recordings to capitalize on the emergence of sampling culture. The song went to number one in the United Kingdom for two weeks in April 1988. It also made the Hot Dance Club Party chart in the United States, (also scraping into the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 at number 91).

The main player in the act was disc jockey and producer Mark Moore. In 1989, the group released its debut album, Original Soundtrack, which featured a line-up of Moore, Pascal Gabriel, Jocasta, Mark D, Linda Love, and Michellé. The album consisted of slightly longer versions of S-Express's "Theme", its follow-up hits "Superfly Guy" (UK #5) and a cover version of Sly and the Family Stone's "Hey Music Lover" (UK #6; its b-side was remixed by minimalist composer Phillip Glass), along with an album's worth of new compositions. By the release of the second album Intercourse, the act was reduced to a duo of Moore with new vocalist and DJ Sonique,  Although not as successful as its debut, Intercourse spawned several mid-charting UK singles and club hits, including "Nothing to Lose", co-written with Martin Gordon, as were several other tunes on the record. Sonique, already a successful DJ, eventually embarked on a solo career and produced one of the biggest club hits of the late 1990s ("It Feels So Good"). Moore went on to release many singles, remixes and albums on his own and also formed the band Needledust.

A E A E I O U U, I sometimes cry
A E A E I O U U, I sometimes cry

You tell me that you love me every day
When we're alone, I really feel in love
But when we're out with friends, I see a change
You treat me bad, I feel like second best

I want your love
(I want your love)
Give me your love, girl
(Give me your love)

That's how I feel, I want to be real

I want your love
(I want your love)
Give me your love, girl
(Give me your love)
I need your touch and I
I owe you so much

A E A E I O U U, I sometimes cry
(Oh)

O U U
(I really care, care, care)
I sometimes lie

Do you realize some things you say?
I know you do, it makes me so confused
I'm sure this ain't the way that love should be
Let's get it right, it's much too good to lose

I want your love
(I want your love)
Give me your love, girl
(Give me your love)
That's how I feel, I want to be real

I want your love

Larry Heard (born May 31, 1960) is an American DJ, record producer and musician who has recorded solo under various names, most notably Mr. Fingers. He is widely known as a pioneering figure in 1980s Chicago house music, and was leader of the influential group Fingers Inc, whose 1988 album Another Side was the first long-form house LP. He is regarded as a progenitor of deep house music, bridging the gap between the futurism and "posthuman tendencies" of house and the lush soulful sound of disco. His landmark 1986 single "Can You Feel It" would be a major influence on dance music.

Born on the South Side of Chicago, Heard grew up hearing jazz and Motown at home, and could play several instruments from a young age. Before beginning his solo musical career in 1983, he was the drummer, at the age of 17, in the band Infinity (a jazz fusion cover group that included Adonis). He is sometimes cited as having been a member of the Manhattan Transfer, but Heard has denied this, saying, "[I] filled in for somebody on one show." He also worked for the US government as a benefit authorizer, which enabled him to buy his first pieces of studio equipment.

Heard began producing music in 1984 after purchasing a synthesizer and drum machine: after a few days with the gear, he had recorded three tracks that would later be regarded as landmarks of house music: "Can You Feel It". "Mystery of Love", and "Washing Machine." Despite initially not having a connection to Chicago's club scene, he eventually met singer and DJ Robert Owens at a party and the two formed the group Fingers Inc, along with Ron Wilson. The group would release the LP Another Side in 1988. Around this time, Heard also began releasing solo singles as Mr. Fingers on Trax Records and DJ International. At the end of the decade, Trax released Amnesia, which compiled Heard's early tracks; it was released without Heard's permission.

larry-heard-mr-fingers-featured.jpg

In 1989, Heard contributed to the debut album by producer Lil' Louis. In the early 1990's, he recorded with Harry Dennis as the It, before setting out on his own, signing with MCA Records as a solo act in 1991 and releasing his first official Mr. Fingers album Introduction in 1992 to international success. After the label interfered with his Mr. Fingers follow-up, he released the less dance-oriented album Sceneries Not Songs, Vol. 1 in 1995 under his given name. He continued to record intermittently in the following years, and released the Mr. Fingers album Cerebral Hemispheres in 2018. Much of Heard's music has been released and re-released under different names, including Loosefingers, Fingers, House Factors, and Trio Zero.

A Taste Of Honey ~ Boogie Oogie Oogie 1978 Disco Purrfection Version

A Taste of Honey was an American recording act, formed in 1971 by associates Janice–Marie Johnson and Perry Kibble. In 1978, they had one of the best known chart-toppers of the disco era, "Boogie Oogie Oogie". After their popularity waned during the 1980s, Johnson went on to record as a solo artist and released the album One Taste of Honey which produced numerous minor hits. In 2004, Hazel Payne and Janice–Marie Johnson reunited for the first time in over 20 years to perform on the PBS specials Get Down Tonight: The Disco Explosion and My Music: Funky Soul Superstars.

Formed in 1971, A Taste of Honey hailed from Los Angeles, California. The members of the band consisted of Janice–Marie Johnson (vocals, co-writer, bass), Carlita Dorhan (vocals, guitar), Perry Kibble (keyboards, co-producer, co-writer) and Donald Ray Johnson (drums). Longtime friends Kibble and Janice–Marie Johnson were the original members of the band. Each had left a band to join forces, and after employing several drummers, they settled on Donald Johnson (no relation to Janice–Marie). Gregory Walker also replaced the lead singer (unnamed), who had left the band just prior to the successful release of "Boogie Oogie Oogie". Carlita Dorhan left the group in early 1976, and Hazel Payne was added.

The group began to improve its sound over a period of six years prior to being discovered by Capitol Records. Hitting major cities outside of Los Angeles, they also began doing USO tours, with spots in Spain, Morocco, Taiwan, Thailand, Philippines, and Japan. Upon returning to Los Angeles, while playing in a nightclub, they were spotted by record producers, Fonce and Larry Mizell, who convinced Capitol Records' then vice-executive-producer, Larkin Arnold, to give them an audition. They signed a five-album contract, and billed themselves after Herb Alpert's song, A Taste of Honey. The first single, "Boogie Oogie Oogie",  from their debut album A Taste of Honey, spent three weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1978, and sold two million copies. The group was awarded two platinum records for the single and album, and won the Grammy Award for Best New Artist at the 20th Grammys on February 15, 1979. Janice–Marie Johnson calls the single her "lifeline" and credits Capitol Records executive, Larkin Arnold, with ensuring they owned their own publishing. Their subsequent disco releases, such as "Do It Good" (#79 in 1979) from Another Taste, and "Rescue Me" (1980) failed to attract attention, and by 1980 the group had become a duo consisting of Johnson and Payne.

When recording their cover version of the Kyu Sakamoto song "Sukiyaki",  from their third album, Twice As Sweet (1980), they resisted suggestions to turn it into a dance tune. As a ballad it brought them their second and final major hit of their careers in 1981, when it reached #1 on the Billboard R&B and Adult Contemporary charts and #3 on the Hot 100. A Taste of Honey released its final album, Ladies of the Eighties in 1982. It featured their final Billboard Hot 100 single, "I'll Try Something New" (#41). This cover of the Smokey Robinson and the Miracles hit from 1962 also went to #9 on the R&B charts and #29 on the Adult Contemporary. While preparing to record their fifth album in 1983, Payne left the group and Johnson went on to record as a solo artist to fulfill contractual obligations, releasing One Taste of Honey, which produced the single "Love Me Tonight", a minor hit on the R&B charts. Edwards was born in Fairfield, Alabama, about eight miles from Birmingham, to Reverend Dennis Edwards Sr. He began singing as a toddler, just two years old, in his father's church. The Edwards family moved to Detroit, Michigan when Edwards was about ten years old, and Edwards would continue to sing in the church pastored by his father, eventually becoming choir director. As a teenager, Edwards joined a gospel vocal group called The Mighty Clouds of Joy, and studied music at the Detroit Conservatory of Music. He was not allowed to sing or listen to secular music at home, and his mother disapproved when he began pursuing a career singing rhythm and blues music. In 1961 he organized his own soul/jazz group. Dennis Edwards and the Fireballs. In 1961, Edwards recoreded a single for the obscure Detroit label, International Soulville Records, "I Didn't Have to (But I Did)" b/w "Johnnie on the Spot". Following time served in the US military, in 1966 Edwards auditioned for Detroit's Motown Records, where he was signed but placed on retainer. Later that year, he was assigned to join The Contours after their lead singer, Billy Gordon, fell ill. In 1967, the Contours were the opening act for several Temptations concerts, and Temptations members Eddie Kendricks and Otis Williams - who were considering replacing their own lead singer, David Ruffin (who was a personal friend of Edwards), took notice of Edwards and made his acquaintance.

Garrett was born on June 24, 1960 in Los Angeles and raised in Compton, where she started singing as a child. Born Deborah Christine Garrett, she opted to change her name at age 13, because of the disdain she had towards her birth name. Garrett said, "It's a pretty name but nobody called me Deborah. It was always abbreviated to Deb, Debbie, or DeeDee. I hated it". She later changed it to Siedah, which meant "shining and star-like". As a teenager, Garrett was part of a five piece band called Black Velvet & Satin Soul, which performed Top 40 hits around various clubs. Garrett's mother was an interior designer who had singer D.J. Rogers as one of her clients. Rogers heard Garrett's singing abilities and recruited her as a background vocalist on his 1977 album, Love, Music and Life. She announced that she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) when performing at the "Race To Erase MS" event in 2017.
