Kai the Hatchet-Wielding Hitchhiker is an internet viral video featuring a hitchhiking man who calls himself "Kai". It was released on February 2, 2013, by a reporter from a local news station in California. The video went viral and received national attention in the press. Kai Lawrence, later identified as Caleb Lawrence McGillvary (b. September 3, 1988 from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, would cite the fall-out from the video as part of his defense against a homicide charge that was filed in New Jersey a few months after the video was released.

The video is by local Fox affiliate KMPH in Fresno, California. The video is an eyewitness account by a man calling himself "Kai" who describes what happened (according to Kai) soon after the course of events and while still on the scene. Kai recounts he had been hitchhiking and was picked up by Jett Simmons McBride, who Kai describes as weighing 300 pounds and who claims to be Jesus Christ. As they are driving, McBride tells Kai he once raped a 14-year-old girl in the Virgin Islands while on a business trip. McBride then crashes into a pedestrian at an intersection, pinning him against the rear of a parked truck and the front of the vehicle McBride is driving. Kai jumps out of the car to help the pedestrian while McBride remains in the car. When a bystander arrives on the scene to help, McBride jumps out and attacks her in a bear hug. Sensing the woman's life might be in danger, and believing the man could snap her neck "like a pencil stick", Kai removes a hatchet from his backpack and repeatedly strikes McBride in the back of the head. In the video Kai describes the hatchet blows with the words "Smash, Smash, SUH-MASH" while he reenacts the over-head swings. Kai recounts he was interrogated by police and set free.
The video was uploaded to YouTube on February 2, 2013, by Jessob Reisbeck, who had conducted the interview for KMPH. As of December 16, 2021, the video had over 7.8 million views. The Gregory Brothers sampled the interview and turned it into a song; as of October 27, 2019, the music video had garnered over 10 million views. In January 2020, Kai was interviewed on Inside Edition, where scenes from the viral video were replayed; this video segment uploaded to YouTube had over 7.5 million views as of November 2022.

Kai was arrested on murder charges in May 2013 for the death of New Jersey attorney Joseph Galfy. Kai maintained he fought against Galfy in self-defense. According to Kai, he had been drugged and raped by Galfy after he offered Kai a place to stay for the night. Kai stated that the police claimed the sexual encounter was consensual and the murder premeditated; however, Kai said that after the viral video in California, he had no need to have sex with men like Galfy, whom Kai described as unattractive, stating "Do you know how many hot chicks—never mind. Even if I was gay, do you know how many hot guys wanted to fuck me after that shit in California? I'm not even being vain. It's just a fact, like—no offense, but he [Galfy] was not a looker".

After the murder charges, the video views increased substantially increasing its viral reach. Fans of the video, who considered Kai a hero for saving the woman, raised a legal fund. Kai was imprisoned for over five years awaiting trial which began April 1, 2019. Kai took the stand in his own defense and was combative during cross examination; he made an outburst during his defense lawyer’s closing arguments nearly leading to his expulsion from the court room. A jury found him guilty of first-degree murder and he was sentenced to 57 years in prison. He will serve 85 percent of that term before the possibility of parole, with the judge telling McGillvary, "when you become eligible for parole, you will still be younger than Mr. Galfy was when you murdered him." Galfy was 73 at the time of his death. Kai said he planned to appeal the conviction.

Daniel McConnell was in bed when his wife witnessed an almigty crash just outside..He said his wife first heard the crash at the neighbouring fish and chip shop, which is run by his friend's mother.

"I come outside in me jocks, and I've seen old mate… and I said, 'oi, what are you doing there mate, you gotta wait here,' and he's like, 'nah, nah, I fell asleep behind the wheel,'" Mr McConnell told Australia's Nine Network.
"He just started taking off, so I've run inside, jumped in me little purple car, and started chasing him up the street.
"He went down a side street, and I told the coppers he went down a side street, and they went and got him."

The former showgrounds worker leapt into action about 2am on Thursday when a car smashed into a fish-and-chip shop on Nudgee Rd, Hendra, in Brisbane’s inner northeast.
“I jumped out of bed and all I had (on) was my undies and I walked out the front and I’ve seen the car smashed and I’ve seen the bloke walking back to the car. And so I’ve walked outside and said, ‘What are you doing, mate? You can’t be leaving the scene’.”
Mr McConnell said his decision to chase the 35-year-old driver was “just instinct”.
“All I had was me jocks on and I was chasing him up the street and I was just like, ‘mate!’ If I hadn’t have gone and chased him down, mate, they (the shop owners) would have been left with one bloody big bill,” he said.
“It’s really quite funny, I didn’t intend on trying to be famous … I just see it as I done me mates a favour. It’s me mate’s mum’s shop, so what else can you do?”
Within hours, the internet star had been stopped in the street by a stranger wanting a selfie.
The “top Aussie bloke” cashed in on his new-found fame, with a bidding war between breakfast TV heavyweights Nine and Seven to get the undie-clad hero on TV.
The two stations made offers into the thousands for an exclusive.
It is understood the father-of-four was wooed by the chance to go live with Sunrise host David Koch

An overjoyed little boy is seen gushing about his first kiss in a heartwarming video he filmed for his parents.
